What we collect

When you use GiftWhisper, we may collect the following information:

• Quiz answers — the responses you provide during the gift-finding quiz, used to generate personalized recommendations.
• Account data — if you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo from Google. We store this to enable your account, saved results, and session history.
• Email address — if you subscribe to reminders, we store your email to send occasion-based notifications.
• Reminder dates — if you add important dates (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.), we store the person's name, relationship, occasion type, and date.
• Gift votes and preferences — your votes (yes, maybe, no) on gift suggestions are stored to improve recommendations during refinement rounds.
• Usage analytics — we track events such as logins, quiz completions, gift link clicks, and votes to understand how the service is used and to improve it.

How we use your data

Your data is used for the following purposes:

• Generating personalized quiz questions and gift recommendations via AI services.
• Sending you email reminders before important dates you've saved.
• Improving the quality and relevance of gift suggestions.
• Understanding usage patterns to improve the service.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Google authentication

GiftWhisper uses Google OAuth for sign-in. When you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo. We do not access your Google contacts, calendar, or any other Google account data. You can revoke access at any time through your Google account settings.

Email reminders

If you subscribe to reminders, we will send you emails before your saved occasions (typically 2 weeks and 3 days before each date). Reminder emails are sent through Resend, a third-party email delivery service. You can unsubscribe from reminder emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us directly.

Affiliate links

GiftWhisper participates in the Amazon Associates Program. When you click a "Shop This" link, you are directed to Amazon.com with our affiliate tag. If you make a purchase, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Amazon may use cookies to track your activity after clicking — please refer to Amazon's privacy policy for details.

Cookies & analytics

We use essential cookies to maintain your session state and authentication. We track usage events (such as page views, quiz completions, login events, and affiliate link clicks) internally through our database to understand how the service is used. We do not use third-party advertising trackers or sell analytics data.

Data storage

Your data is stored securely in a Supabase database (hosted on AWS infrastructure). This includes your account information, quiz history, gift results, votes, saved gifts, email subscriptions, reminder dates, and analytics events. Data is protected using industry-standard encryption and access controls.

Data retention & deletion

Quiz answers from anonymous sessions are not stored after your browser session ends. If you have an account, your data is retained until you request deletion. You can request deletion of all your data at any time by emailing us. Upon request, we will delete your account, quiz history, saved gifts, reminders, email subscription, and all associated analytics data.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services to operate GiftWhisper:

• Google OAuth — user authentication and sign-in
• Anthropic (Claude API) — generates gift recommendations
• Google (Gemini API) — generates personalized quiz questions
• Supabase — database storage for user data, quiz history, and analytics
• Resend — email delivery for occasion reminders
• Vercel — website hosting and scheduled tasks
• Amazon Associates — affiliate product links

Each service has its own privacy policy. Your quiz answers are sent to AI services in real time for processing and are not retained by those services after the request is complete.

Children's privacy

GiftWhisper is not intended for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
